The U.C. Davis Student Affairs department, through its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiative, convened the second annual “Lifting Black Voices Retreat.” The retreat provided a safe space for staff to express their struggles as well as share in the collective support offered from other campus staff. The event featured a mental health focus. Dr. Darryl Brown was one of four practitioners and presented a slide adaptation to his book Thinking About Your Thinking.
The Bridge Builder Foundation (BBF) ‘Thriving Under the Influence’ Mentor Program is a well thought, and intentional mentoring, coaching and leadership program targeting African American youth. BBF provides culturally relevant programming to help students mitigate their life challenges. BBF has a robust pool (over 100) of professional African American men, across multiple disciplines, that provide dynamic small group, tag-team engagement. The program adopted Thinking About Your Thinking as one of the core texts for the program, providing each student a copy.
CII’s Project Fatherhood was developed to give urban, culturally diverse fathers an opportunity to connect with their children and play a meaningful role in their lives. The goal of the class was to provide a support group for men in caregiving roles – including fathers, stepfathers, foster parents and relative caregivers – to reach their parenting and employment goals. CII purchased copies of Thinking About Your Thinking for all participating fathers.
